Oscar's Eve

It's been the laziest Sunday in a while. I woke up at around 11, and puttered around for a good ten minutes before glancing outside and saw it snowing like gangbusters. This discovery resulted in a long hard think about what to eat for breakfast. We had eggs, but no bread for toast. I didn't feel like an omelette, and no patience for making pancakes. I thought briefly about going to the grocery store to get some bread, but immediately rejected the idea for no good reason. Thus, I pulled on jeans and boots to trudge over to Perks, where I purchased a huge cup of coffee and a sausage-egg-cheese bagel sandwich. I trudged home and had breakfast in bed, which is one of the greatest inventions of all time. I got Zelda up to chill with me on the bed, while I knit and watched three episodes of Sex In The City, Sarah Silverman's Jesus Is Magic, and Clerks.

I'm working on a pair of Monkey Socks from the 06' Winter Knitty, in Lisa Souza's Sock! Merino, in the Violet's Pink Ribbon colorway. This is my third pair of socks; the first were Baudelaires, and the second were Pomatomuses. Yes, yes, I know, I love Cookie's sock patterns and think she is a slightly mad, yet brilliant, socktologist. This is a lady who is good at using lace stitches that are deceptively simple, yet are still fun to knit as well as pretty. A doff of the hat, Cookie, a doff of the hat.

Tonight are the Oscars and I am moments away from leaving for an Oscar party. This is a tradition my friends and I have been cultivating since our university days, and I'm glad it is living on, because I freakin' love the Oscars. I love seeing the triumphs and flops of gowns on the red carpet, I love the lame jokes made by whoever they get to host, I love the little clips of the nominated films, and I love the musical performances. The funny thing is, I rarely see most of the movies that are nominated for awards, and that has no bearing over my enjoyment of the awards show. It also doesn't keep me from making predictions about whose going to take home a little golden guy, so without further ado, here are my picks for the catagories that people really care about:

ACTOR--LEADING:
RYAN GOSLING, Half Nelson
He was basically in every single scene of this movie, and it was so freakin' edgy and arty, I can definitely see this unknown taking home the gold. It reminded me a little of Monster's Ball, and we all remember that.

ACTOR--SUPPORTING:
MARK WAHLBERG, The Departed
Marky-Mark not withstanding, this movie was the darling of every movie critic from here to Walla Walla. Didn't see it, but I think it'll probably win most of it's noms.

ACTRESS--LEADING:
HELEN MIRREN, The Queen
Didn't see it, but she was hyped like crazy.

ACTRESS--SUPPORTING:
JENNIFER HUDSON, Dreamgirls
I can see this happening. She was very good, and the Academy loves its musicals.

ANIMATED FEATURE:
CARS
Didn't see any of the movies that were nominated, but Pixar has a good track record with the Academy.

DIRECTING:
UNITED 93
Come on, the 9/11 movie? Not voting for it would be like letting certain people win.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE:
AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH
Al Gore was second in command to my favorite president, invented the Internet, and also made a movie about global warming. Global warming is now very important. Thus, this movie about global warming, made by Al Gore, will win.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM:
PAN’S LABYRINTH
This movie was freaking incredible. It deserves to win, and even if it doesn't, I'm going to pretend it did.

ORIGINAL SONG:
“LISTEN” - Dreamgirls
I love this song, and since something from Dreamgirls is definitely going to win, and this is the best of the bunch, it will probably win.

SCREENPLAY--ADAPTED:
THE DEPARTED
See above.

SCREENPLAY--ORIGINAL:
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
This was a great film, and since it won't win best picture, this will be the bone they throw it.

BEST PICTURE:
THE DEPARTED
As I said before.

Hello Sara!

I'm glad you found me! I loved the original pattern for Nagano Sakura – thank you for letting me co-opt it for the washerless amongst us… the flowers are brilliant!

CUTE HEDGEHOG. Is he yours? The socks look very delish as well – love that yarn.

All the best!

As someone who no longer has a washer, I feel your pain. The hedgie is mine, although I've only had her for a few months--she's really grown on me, though ;)
